The following independent study options should be completed after finishing regular class assignments, in place of homework, or when you have scored ____ % or higher on any unit quiz. You will need materials listed for each activity and a learning log for the unit.
Attributes of triangles and probability A hands on activity that explores the likelihood of creating different triangles randomly with number cubes. See your teacher for: Trying Triangles pp. 16-17 of Pieces and Patterns: A Patchwork in Math and Science, straw sections, number cubes.
Probability A hands on activity that tests your powers of prediction. See your teacher for: See How They Roll pp.22 and 22 of Pieces and Patterns: A Patchwork in Math and Science.
Research Pythagoras on the internet. Summarize the Pythagorean Theory. What is the impact of that theory on math and/or any other relative field?
How do we know about math? Read about Pythagoras in Volume 1 of Historic Connections in Math, pp. 1-10. This unit should be turned in upon completion.
Read about how statistics have solved Real Life Math Mysteries. You will need p. 52 Mayor, City of Marshfield and p. 55 Writer, Prufrock Press
Read about the kids at Wayside School. Select one or more problems to solve. Make sure you write the name of the book and the problem number(s).
Interested in how statistics are displayed? Complete the Using Graphs menu on p. 73 of Differentiating Instruction with Menus. This may take 2-3 days. Ask for materials as you need them.
Explore range, median, and mode. You will need p. 76 in Differentiating Instruction with Menus.
